Core Competency 3: Incorporating technology in your teachinG
Description of Competency
Core Competency 3 focuses on using digital technologies within teaching practice. This competency is especially important within the changing healthcare climate. With the transition to electronic health records, students are expected to be adept at using technology at the bedside. In addition, limited clinical placement site has necessitated the use of simulation activities to augment clinical experiences. Therefore, it is imperative to integrate technology into teaching not only to facilitate teaching/learning but also to prepare students for integrating technology into their clinical practice.
Provide an artifact and artifact rationale
To develop this competency, I watched a webinar entitled “Engaging Students in Critical Thinking: Teaching with Technology” which introduced a variety of types of technology to consider integrating into the classroom. I also reviewed the QSEN informatics competencies and national league of nursing simulation position statement.
Engaging Students in Critical Thinking: Teaching with Technology
Aired December 8th, 2016
In this webinar you will hear practical advice about how to stimulate critical thinking in students by using technology, Learn best practices for teaching with technology, and flipping the classroom. In addition, this webinar will show you how to expand your facilitation skills by engaging students in critical thinking.

QSEN competencies: Informatics
The overall goal for the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project is to meet the challenge of preparing future nurses who will have the knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) necessary to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work.
Using the Institute of Medicine competencies, QSEN faculty and a National Advisory Board have defined quality and safety competencies for nursing and proposed targets for the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be developed in nursing pre-licensure programs for each competency. These definitions are shared in the six tables below as a resource to serve as guides to curricular development for formal academic programs, transition to practice and continuing education programs.

NLN Position Statements: National League for Nursing Response to NCSBN Simulation Study
The position statement provides an introduction to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) landmark simulation study which provides recommendations for under what circumstances simulation can be substituted for up to 50 percent of traditional clinical experiences.

Interpret/reflect on learning
What skills and techniques did I learn that will help me become a better educator?
I began by familiarizing myself with the QSEN Informatics Competencies and NLN simulation position statements to understand the factors influencing the utilization of technology in practice and academic settings. These documents demonstrated the importance of technology but also the need for careful consideration for the best use for technology.
The webinar provided an introduction to a variety of technology resources for use nursing programs (see below for list of technology resources). In addition, I learned that typically nursing students want a rationale for why something is important. Therefore, it is important to tell and show why it is important to know the skill or information. Students desire learning to be fun and efficient and would like opportunities to test their knowledge and check understanding.
When utilizing technology within educational settings, best practices include being willing to take risks, introducing one technology/resource at a time (but also trying the technology a couple times), obtaining student feedback, not overdoing technology (for example using the same game-like quiz software every class prior), and having a back up plan.
What things am I still uncertain about regarding this topic that I need to investigate further in the future?
The documents and webinar provided a helpful introduction to practical ways to incorporate technology. Universal design was briefly mentioned in the presentation as being important. Universal design is a concept that I should investigate further to better understand the implications of universal design on teaching.
How can I apply materials from this session to my own class to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning?
The webinar provided an introduction to a variety of technology resources. I intend on trying one of the technologies, Kahoot, to obtain real-time feedback on student’s current knowledge. In addition, I plan to obtain student feedback on the use of technology within the classroom setting. This session provided me with resources to use in future courses to facilitate student learning.
